Saturday 3 March, 2012. Karapiro - Arapuni Section : Waikato River Trails.
But this weekend
had a challenge - many of our members
were touring in the South Island and there was a storm which
caused the postponement of this year's Ironman.
This is where we went on Saturday 3rd.
(Map : Ron)
We started where
Maungatautari Road meets SH1.
Here, Maungatautari Road crosses Lake Karapiro.
A wee rainbow to see us on our way.
Caroll caught us up at Horahora Road.

This is what resulted from the What the.
They are smiling - they are not looking at the black cloud behind them.
(Actually, we only had one shower on the ride and by now we had already had it.)
Luitgard, Susan, Ron, Caroll, Wolfgang, Bryan and John.
This is the start
of the Karapiro - Arapuni section of the Waikato River Trails.
For the first 5.7 km the trail is right next to the road, so we chose the road.

Loitering behind the loos at Little Waipa.
(These had been
built since the beginning of the year.
What they replaced would have only been used by the really desperate.)
We joined the most
northerly section of the Waikato River Trails
at Little Waipa.
Bryan and Caroll quickly figure out how to use the barriers.
There was a lovely carpet of pine needles to start the trail.
The trail gives frequent views of the river.

Caroll is concentrating on the path just before she sees the view to her left.
Here it is.

No - he hadn't fallen off the boardwalk. He had simply hopped down
there
for a different angle of the oncoming peleton.
Boardwalk traffic jam.
Photo : Caroll
The traffic jam was caused by wind felled branches.
Wolfgang gets in to action clearing this one.
We were quite lucky with the wind. It was very strong, but down at
river level it
had little effect on us. Later we had to head in to it for a while, but we were
rewarded on our return trip with a very favourable tail wind.
More boardwalk action.
Susan disappearing in to a dark section of bush.
Caroll and Bryan negotiating a clipon sort of doodackie.
Taking the next photo.

A steep little pinch not far from Arapuni. It was OK if you had a reasonably low gear.
At last!! The Rhubarb Café at Arapuni.
It was fairly full when we got there, and chocka 5 minutes after we sat down.

Bryan was lucky his carrot cake did not get nicked while he was facing the camera.

Photos : John - unless they were taken by someone else.
