Masterton - Wellington - Napier
Coastal Tour
White Rock Station - Glenburn Station
- awesome folk along the way
the hospitality was wonderful. Each day we met heaps of friendly, welcoming people - lunch in a shearing shed with the farmer, gifts of produce & numerous chats with folk interested in our journey. We were often invited in for a cuppa our first day on reaching Longbush we shared morning tea with the mums & preschoolers at their Wednesday playgroup and at Ngawi enjoyed the company of a couple at their bach for the weekend. Near Tora we joined a group renting the Wellington Cosmopolitian club house and at a station a couple who host overseas deer hunters sheltered us from the fierce afternoon wind. At their house we met two guys from Wyoming, dressed in their camouflage fatigues, ready for the afternoon hunt.
The day started with an improved cycleway along the beautiful coastline.
The wreck of a fishing boat, and a local resident, at Te Kaukau Point.
The much photographed woolshed at Tora.
Donald making an inspection inside the woolshed.
Donald the gatekeeper.
The Gatekeeper contemplates the Devil's Mile.
A rest stop, and time to admire the view back to Te Awaiti Station -
before confronting the Devil's Mile.
The Devil's Mile. The untraversable track has slipped in to the sea below.
The headland forms the southern end of Pahaoa Station.
Here's the Devil's Mile from the air.
Have a play with the map.
So we headed 1.5km inland to find an alternative farm track.
Our camp for the night on the boundary of Te Awaiti and Pahaoa Stations.
There was a stream below for a wash and fresh water.
Next day we climbed to 350m on the alternative track.
And came out above these farm buildings far below on Pahaoa Station.
The river was too deep to cross at the mouth so we had to cycle 5km inland to enter Glendhu Station.
The NW wind increased in strength so this rock provided shelter at lunchtime.
Weathered rocks on the historic Honeycomb Track.
Our cottage for the night at Glenburn Station.
